Nigeria’s largest container terminal, APM Terminals Apapa has invested more than N50 million in employee development programs since the start of 2021.
More than 100 employees have benefited from more than 18 different training programs spread over various professional skills. Further employee development programs are planned for late 2021 and 2022.
Terminal Manager Steen Knudsen said the continued investment in developing and improving employee skills is the key to success for APM Terminals Apapa.
“Our people is one of the five values of our company. It is important that we continue to invest in developing and improving the skills of our organization, in order to be ready for the challenges of tomorrow. Over the past year, we have invested heavily in improving our assets and facilities, and this journey continues. We have also started investing in training and development, as we need to have an organization that can truly meet the international standards of our stakeholders –
customers, the Nigerien economy and community, employees and our shareholders. It is up to all of us to make good use of training for our development and to continue to have a positive impact on the company, ”said Knudsen.
APM Terminals Apapa employee development programs reach out to all levels of employees – from senior managers to middle managers and junior employees. The majority of development programs focus on the development of employees in engineering and operations functions, as they represent the bulk of the employees directly involved in the handling of operational heavy lifting equipment.
Some of the trainings and certifications include: Liebherr, Leading As Managers at APM, electrical and hydraulic training, training in asset management, tire technology and inspection in collaboration with Michelin, and Airborne / Structure Borne ISO CAT I certification from UE Systems, among others. .
Crane Foreman, Victor Idoroyen Williams, who took a Konecranes TC5 / TCE5 program, described it as a “revelation”.
He said: “We have learned to better understand our new equipment; they are environmentally friendly with lower fuel consumption and fuel emissions. It is now easier to troubleshoot; we can easily trace faults, carry out checks to determine faults and their probable solutions. The new equipment works more with artificial intelligence; there is a display screen on the equipment where you can talk to him and he answers. “
Lawal Ibrahim, RTG Crane Electrician, discusses the Siemens Industrial Automation and Hydraulics program: “It was an in-depth and informative course on the control system of our RTG cranes which uses Siemens software. We were introduced to recent software developments and exposed to other features that future equipment is likely to have.
“The course compares the differences between old and new equipment. Now we have a better understanding of how the software works and how you can use it to troubleshoot machine problems. I am delighted that the organization gives everyone the opportunity to learn and grow. “
